NORRIS VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

FIRE DETECTOR PROGRAM

TEST DETECTORS Pickens County fire departments are participating in a smoke detector program sponsored by BILO and the South Carolina Firemen's Association. By simply requesting a detector, a person will be given a battery operated unit. The goal is to have at least one working detector in each home in the state which will hopefully give the occupants a warning to escape.

TEST YOUR DETECTORS MONTHLY

CHANGE YOUR BATTERIES WHEN YOU SET YOUR CLOCKS FOR THE TIME CHANGE

It is recommended that smoke detectors that are 10 years or older be replaced.

Statistics prove that smoke detectors that are 10 years old need replaced. Detectors working for 10 years without stopping have been in use for 87,000 hours.

Right now it is estimated that there are 77 million smoke detectors that need to be replaced. That is 1/3 of the detectors in use. An additional 5 million will need to be replaced each year.

Each year 1100 children die from fire. An additional 11,000 are injuried, mostly at night. Many times it is found that the home is without working smoke detectors or has no detector at all.

Research shows that every second counts. You have less than 2 - 3 minutes to get out of a fire.

IF YOU CAN'T REMEMBER WHEN YOUR SMOKE DETECTOR WAS INSTALLED, THEN IT'S TIME TO REPLACE IT.

What can be done to keep track of your detectors? Some smoke detectors have a sticker inside that has a place to put the date that the detectors was installed. If it doesn't, put a sticker inside it and mark it yourself.

WHERE DO YOU NEED DETECTORS?

One near or in each sleeping area.
One on each level of the home.

SMOKE DETECTORS SAVE LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
