Rememeber to change the batteries in your
smoke detectors when you reset
your clock at the time change in the spring and fall. Test your
detectors on a monthly basis. Use a vacuum to clean dust from the
detector. Do not use compressed air to blow the dust away since this
could damage the detector.
If you are using a fire place or furnace, make sure the chimney is
cleared of
any debris such as bird nests and creosote buildup before lighting
a fire. There are incidents every year where someone's chimmney
has caught on fire. Chimneys in older homes that do not have flue
liners are more likely to be damaged if there is a fire because there
are more morter joints that can fail which will allow the hot gases
to escape into the attic.
Also, do not have anything that may burn near your heat source. Paper,
furniture, clothes will all receive radiated heat from your heater
and should be kept at a safe distance. A good rule of thumb is to take
a yard stick and if it will touch both the heat source and the combustable
material, then they are too close together and should be moved farther
apart.
If you are using a kerosene heater, do not refill it inside the house.
Wait till the heater is cool and take it outside to fill. Keep the
kerosene can outside.
