Norris Fire Department has received a $29,083 grant from the federal
goverment. The money has been used to improve the fire fighters safety
by buying 6 new SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) air packs that
are used when entering a structure to fight a fire so that the firemen
have fresh air to breath. In addition, seven of our existing SCBA
units will be updated to the latest standard which includes PASS devices
that sound a loud alert if a fireman stops moving while inside the structure,
because his is injured or trapped. This will help the rescue team locate
the fireman quickly. Also, a heads up display will allow the fireman to
more easily see the amount of remaining air in the SCBA bottle. 13 new
SCBA bottles were also received which will allow more fire scene operations
to be carried out before backup air supply has to be called in to refill
the bottles.
The money comes from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program
which awards one-year grants directly to fire departments to be used to
improve their ablility to respond to a fire and to increase fire fighter
safety. The program was begun in 2000 when Senator Hollings co-sponsored
legislation that introduced the Firefighter Investment and Response
Enhancement (FIRE) Act.

Many thanks to everyone who helped provide support one of our former
firefighters Tom Reynolds who had a liver transplant on Thursday
June 7, 2001 in Charleston, SC. Tom is doing fine now and
returned to work a few weeks after the operation.
Almost $6000 was raised through fund raisers and donations. The
Reynolds family, Norris Fire Department and Easley Central Water
District would like to thank and indicate our appreciation to
everyone who has contributed their time and money to support Tom
in his time of need.

In October 1999, the town of Norris ordered a new fire truck
which was delivered in June 2000. It is an Pierce built 2-door Responder
with a top mount control panel.
This truck has become our front line truck on structure fires and has
allowed our existing fire truck to act as a backup truck and first
response to grass and woods fires.
