NORRIS VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

RECENT NEWS

August 2003

Norris Fire Department along with each of the other fire departments in Pickens County has recieved a thermal imager camera. This camera will greatly enhance our ability to quickly search a house and rescue any victims. Also

August 2003

Norris Fire Department has received a $29,083 grant from the federal goverment. The money has been used to improve the fire fighters safety by buying 6 new SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) air packs that are used when entering a structure to fight a fire so that the firemen have fresh air to breath. In addition, seven of our existing SCBA units will be updated to the latest standard which includes PASS devices that sound a loud alert if a fireman stops moving while inside the structure, because his is injured or trapped. This will help the rescue team locate the fireman quickly. Also, a heads up display will allow the fireman to more easily see the amount of remaining air in the SCBA bottle. 13 new SCBA bottles were also received which will allow more fire scene operations to be carried out before backup air supply has to be called in to refill the bottles.

The money comes from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program which awards one-year grants directly to fire departments to be used to improve their ablility to respond to a fire and to increase fire fighter safety. The program was begun in 2000 when Senator Hollings co-sponsored legislation that introduced the Firefighter Investment and Response Enhancement (FIRE) Act.

August 2003

Norris FD joined with Liberty FD to hold a boot drive to raise money for MDA.

May 2003 and May 2002

Norris FD was an active participant in the 1st and 2nd annual Norris Fest at the town park.

OLD NEWS

January - March 2003

Norris Fire Department hosted two academy courses. The first is Emergency Vehicle Driver and it was followed by Pumper Operations which trained us on the proper setup and usage of the fire trucks and how to calculate the water flows needed to fight a fire.

Summer 2001

Many thanks to everyone who helped provide support one of our former firefighters Tom Reynolds who had a liver transplant on Thursday June 7, 2001 in Charleston, SC. Tom is doing fine now and returned to work a few weeks after the operation.

Almost $6000 was raised through fund raisers and donations. The Reynolds family, Norris Fire Department and Easley Central Water District would like to thank and indicate our appreciation to everyone who has contributed their time and money to support Tom in his time of need.

Spring 2001

We had ISO to come in and rerate the town's fire protection rating. It dropped from 7 to 6. We only missed the rating of 5 by a few hundreths of a point.

See our ISO page for more information: ISO Rating

June 2000

In October 1999, the town of Norris ordered a new fire truck which was delivered in June 2000. It is an Pierce built 2-door Responder with a top mount control panel.

This truck has become our front line truck on structure fires and has allowed our existing fire truck to act as a backup truck and first response to grass and woods fires.

See our apparatus page for more information: Apparatus Review
